If you are a parent of a toddler, there is hardly any doubt you haven’t heard of "The Wiggles". Sam, Murray, Jeff and Anthony have rewritten the book on children’s entertainment through song and dance.

Needless to say, having a 3 year old who doesn’t miss their daily program on "Disney Channel", I jumped at the chance to learn more about how this group got started, and how they became the sensation that they are today.

"Hello! This is Murray from The Wiggles" was something that made my son’s eyes widen as he heard the familiar voice come through the phone. The group was just off from their tour in Europe, getting ready for their only US appearance. I think I was just as nervous as he was standing next to me as I asked Murray how The Wiggles formed.

"Well, Anthony and I, and Greg, the original lead singer were all becoming childhood teachers, and we all met while we were going to university together", says Murray, The Red Wiggle. "We were learning the way children think, and how to talk to children. We were also all musicians and when we finished university, we said ‘Let’s record an album for children’ using what we learned."

Enlisting the help of Jeff Fatt (The Purple Wiggle), who played with Anthony in an 80s band called "The Cockroaches", the group set off on their first recording project and released their first self-titled album in 1991.

"We were expecting this to be a one off project," continued Murray, "but it was released, it started to sell, and soon we were performing live shows, creating videos and touring."

With That, The Wiggles, were born. Over the years, the group has taken the key concepts that they learned in early childhood development and education, and applied those concepts in all of their performances.

Currently, the group is building on several programs to improve childhood education through their scholarship program, and working with schools and pre-schools to improve their music programs.

"It’s something that we’d like to do more of, on the educational side of things. It’s good if you can use your success in that way I think."

For over 15 years, The Wiggles consisted of Greg Page (Yellow), Murray Cook (Red), Anthony Field (Blue), and Jeff Fatt (Purple). However, in 2006, Greg Page announced that he would be leaving the group due to a chronic illness known as "Orthostatic Intolerance".

"The illness made it very difficult for Greg to tour and even perform." say’s Murray. "Today, he spends his time with his family, and concentrates on his recovery."

Sam Moran, who joined The Wiggles team in 1998 as host with the "Dorothy The Dinosaur Show" and stepped up to fill the shoes of the "Yellow Wiggle".

The group will make their only US appearance at the Nokia Theatre on August 2nd for two performances.

"People who have seen us before will know it’s a very fun show. Lots of singing and dancing, and we encourage the children to be involved, and get up and dance.

There will be plenty of familiar songs, Dorothy The Dinosaur, Henry The Octopus, Wags the Dog, and of course Captain Feathersword.

We have some new sets, and some new songs as well. Some people have called it a cross between a Broadway musical and a rock show for kids, but it’s for the whole family as well."

Can’t get enough of The Wiggles? Don’t forget about the only Wiggly Play Center in North America located in our own back yard. The Wiggly Play Center can be found at 4944 Preston Rd in Frisco!
